Gum Lift

A smile is one of the most beautiful things in the world. That is because it conveys a positive emotion: happiness. Unfortunately, many people will actively try to avoid smiling or will only smile with their lips because they are embarrassed about showing their teeth and gums. There are a variety of reasons people do this, including broken teeth, chipped teeth, crooked teeth or stained teeth. There are also those who hide their smile because their smile is too “gummy”. This can happen for a variety of reasons: for some, their gums have not receded properly after their permanent teeth have come in, while for others, their lips reveal too much of their gums when they smile. It could also be caused by the way the upper jaw developed. Regardless of the reason, many suffer from lack or loss of confidence as a result.

Thankfully, there is an elective procedure called a gum lift that can help address gummy smiles and restore confidence! Gum lifts can be used to reveal more of your teeth – and show less gum.

Traditional Methods

A gum lift can be a painful procedure. After administering a local anesthesia, a dentist would cut the gums, reshape them to the desired appearance and then stitch it up. The procedure would require many weeks of recovery time. The extensive healing time could increase the patient’s vulnerability to infection, which could increase pain, discomfort and extend recovery time.

Laser Treatment

Using the latest in dental techniques, Dr. Peter uses a laser to perform gum lifts. The use of the laser drastically reduces recovery time and minimizes the pain felt from the procedure. First, a local anesthetic is used to numb the area. Then, the laser is used to cut and reshape the gum line, making it proportional and visually appealing.

The laser is very precise and minimizes damage to the surrounding tissue. Another benefit of using a laser is that it automatically seals off the blood vessels so that there is little or no bleeding. There is also no need for stitches! The procedure does not take long and a small dose, if any, of over the counter pain medication is all that may be required afterwards.

Risks

The risks associated with this procedure are similar to minor procedures and include infection, swelling, discomfort or tooth sensitivity.

Aftercare

After the procedure, you will receive detailed instructions on how to care for your gums. It is extremely important to follow these instructions to avoid any infections during the healing stage. A follow-up appointment will also be necessary to ensure that the area has healed well and that you are happy with the results.

Choosing Dr. Peter

Due to the complexity of this procedure, it is essential to choose an experienced dentist, one with extensive training and experience to ensure that your gum lift will give you the smile that you have always wanted. If not performed properly, removing too much of the gum can expose too much of your teeth, leading to sensitivity and a “too-toothy” smile.

At Dundas Dental, our primary goal is your health, safety and satisfaction first and foremost. If yours is a challenging case, Dr. Peter would not hesitate to refer you to one of the periodontal specialists that he collaborates with.
